Pick a destination and go!

Costa Rica, one of the most biologically diverse areas on the globe, has more than five percent of the world's known species of plant and animal life. The reason for this diversity: the landscape itself. Costa Rica has twelve distinctly different ecological zones. This offers the adventurous traveler an unparalleled opportunity to experience a wider variety of ecosystems and natural treasures than can be found anywhere.

If you are seeking a destination that offers natural beauty, friendly people, and a comfortable tropical climate, you will find all of this and more in Costa Rica.

Long considered one of the most peaceful countries in the world, Costa Rica has held democratic elections for over a century. In 1948, the government abolished the military. Costa Rica has avoided the civil strife that has plagued the rest of Central America. The literacy rate is over 90%. The people are warm, friendly, and justifiably proud of this very peaceful land.

Costa Rica is roughly the size of West Virginia. Over one quarter of the total land area is protected as a part of the National Park System or private reserves. The country has coasts on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean, so there is no shortage of beautiful, clean, uncrowded beaches. The surfing on the Pacific Coast is considered to be the finest in Central America. World class deep sea fishing is available on both coasts, as is very fine scuba diving and snorkeling.

The coastal areas are spectacular. However, Costa Rica has much more to offer the traveler seeking the ultimate experience. The diversity of the ecosystem is staggering. There are several types of rain forest, accessible active volcanoes, four mountain ranges, over 500 miles of pristine white water rivers, hot springs, countless waterfalls, wide open cattle range and rich agricultural areas. The varieties of flora and fauna are equally diverse. There are over 1,100 species of orchid. Monkeys, sloths, iguanas, hummingbirds and macaws are plentiful. Occasionally jaguars and ocelots can be seen. In just one national park alone, over 3,000 species of butterflies have been recorded.
