Route of the Saints

The only tourists that seem to know this area are the serious bird watchers, and they aren't telling anyone!

One area that is overlooked by many of the guide books and certainly by most travel agents is the area known as the Route of the Saints.

This area is only 80 kilometers south of San Jose, off the Inter American Highway. At an elevation of seven thousand feet, this is known to be some of Central America’s best habitat for the elusive Quetzal. You can horseback ride through the verdant, cool, incredibly green cloudforest or fish in the cool mountain rivers for a trout dinner.

This can be an extremely rustic area. Do not expect gourmet meals or luxurious accommodations. The food tends to be wholesome home cookin’ and the hotels, adequate. However, this is a wonderful place to get to know the typically friendly country folk of Costa Rica. Come with an open mind, good hiking shoes, and binoculars.
